Parental Controls

Can Help You Keep Your Kids Safe Online

There are a variety of places you can find parental controls. Some areas include the Internet, television and video gaming systems, cell phones, credit cards, and GPS devices. These types of controls can provide parents with peace of mind about their child’s safety when adult supervision is not present.

Many parents worry about allowing their child access to the Internet without guidance. Worry no longer! Supervising their every click is unreasonable, thankfully there’s technology to aide in controlling what your child sees, and more importantly what they shouldn’t see. Most kids have email and parents can set up a contact list so only approved individuals can contact your child. Some email services charge a monthly fee for this feature, but some provide a service like this free of charge. All that is very convenient but what about the other areas of the Internet?

A lot of kids like to use the Internet for browsing purposes, and Safe Eyes is one type of software you can purchase for around $50 bucks. Which not only controls email access, but also limits the amount of content availability to children. This handy software also helps monitor your child’s instant messaging habits. With this feature parents get IM recording and reviewing abilities, so you can review and discuss what is appropriate for online conversation. Other areas of this software include time limits, program blocking, and instant alerts. Using the time limit setting you can control the amount of time spent online along with the time of day access is available. Program blocking is pretty much self-explanatory it blocks programs, applications, and any files not fit for your child. With instant alerts you can be notified by phone, email, or text what your child is viewing. In addition to Safe eyes, there are many other software programs like this such as “Spyagent” and “Webwatcher”. What will they think of next?

Controlling what your children watch on TV is just a password away. Most cable and satellite services have programs designed to do just that. All you have to do is think of a password and select the channels, genres, or specific programs you’d like to prohibit. Other types of entertainment you might want to monitor are their video gaming systems. Much like television you create a password to block their ability to play inappropriate games, and using a password limits who can change settings on your families gaming systems. If your gaming system connects to the Internet this component also protects whom they come in contact with, or where they go online.

Speaking of whom they come in contact with, or where they go. GPS systems also have parental controls for vehicles and cell phones. With this kind of regulation you can see where your child is, or through their cell phone examine what they are sending and receiving. That’s not all they’ve invented for cell phones, now you can limit their usage of minutes, and the number of texts. Lastly, you don’t have to worry anymore about giving your child a credit or debit card because parental controls cover that too. Now you can allow your kids to go to the mall with friends and you don’t have to be concerned about them spending over budget. Spending limits are easily set in place and can be adjusted whenever necessary.

Each aspect of parental controls are good tools to protect and teach your children was kind of conduct is appropriate when unsupervised. Whether they are surfing the Internet, television, playing video games, or using their cell phone/credit card/GPS device, by teaching your children the proper way of using these conveniences you provide them with a sense of right and wrong. This sense can prevent exposure to online predators, inappropriate actions, and from negative information found on the web and in everyday life.
